Gulf of Taranto under observation: the new oceanographic campaign launched

Posted on

It starts today, on October 1st, 2014, the oceanographic campaign in the Gulf of Taranto that will involve the Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change (CMCC) in collaboration with Istituto Idrografico della Marina (IIM) and the Galatea ship of Italian Navy, Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche – Istituto di Scienze Marine (CNR – ISMAR), Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) – Sezione di Bologna and University of Bari.
The procedure will require three steps and will take place from October 1st, 2014, to October 10th, 2014 while collecting physics parameter and currents data in the Gulf of Taranto and Mar Grande. The measure will be sent nearly in real time to several research centers ashore for the calibration and validation of high-resolution numerical models to forecast marine surface and deep-water currents.
The oceanographic campaign is part of a broader research project that aims at collecting the same measures in different seasonal periods with different marine parameter while improving the forecasting oceanographic modelling.
