G8 leaders gathered on May 18th-19th in Camp David, Maryland for an intensive two-day summit focused on economy, energy industry and climate. The discussion was held from the perspective of security of reliable and sustainable production and transportation of various energy sources as these are considered essential to global economic growth and to the overall efforts to address climate change. Governments should take initiatives to boost confidence energy efficiency potential and sustainable growth while not increasing inflationary pressures in the environment to improve productivity. To facilitate the trade of energy around the world, G8 leaders agreed to take further steps to remove obstacles to the evolution of global energy infrastructure, to pursue universal access to cleaner, safer, and more affordable energy and to reduce barriers and refrain from discriminatory measures that impede energy market access.
The summit leaders agreed to continue their efforts to address climate change and recognize the need to increase mitigation ambition in the period to 2020 in order to limit global temperature’s increase to 2°C above preindustrial levels. Leaders also declared their support to the outcome of the COP17, held in Durban, to implement the Cancun agreements and launching the Durban Platform, which they welcomed as a significant breakthrough toward the adoption of a legal instrument or an agreed outcome, having legal force and being applicable to all Parties.
