ClimaSouth Regional Workshop on Methods and Tools for Vulnerability Assessment

ClimaSouth has conducted during Mar-Nov 2015, a Regional Programme on Downscaling Climate Modelling including hands-on training in the use of downscaled information for impact assessment. The workshop proposed here will build on these previous efforts and cover a wide spectrum of vulnerability assessment methods using quantitative models and participatory (stakeholder based) approaches. To illustrate the methods, the workshop will  focus on the vulnerability assessment on coastal zone and agriculture sector. Each participant country team will then be invited to undertake a supervised homework analysis in the months following the workshop.

Organisers: ClimaSouth (Agriconsulting consortium) with a lead technical partner institution (CMCC).
Chair of the three-day event: G. Galluccio, ClimaSouth Scientific Leader and Project Manager.

Country beneficiaries: all ClimaSouth countries

Objective: the overall objective of the ClimaSouth programme is supporting the transition of South Mediterranean countries towards low carbon development and climate resilience, in a context of sustainable and democratic development, by enhancing regional cooperation, information sharing and capacity development on climate change mitigation and adaptation between the EU and its Mediterranean neighbours and among South Mediterranean partners themselves.

“Strengthening institutional adaptation capacity” is one of the 5 purposes of the project: This purpose is implemented through three activities:

  • Activity 3.1.1: Adaptation data management and analysis
  • Activity 3.1.2: Vulnerability assessments
  • Activity 3.1.3: Adaptation plan development/Enhancement/Update of existing adaptation Strategies/Plans.

The vulnerability workshop proposed here falls within the scope of Activity (3.1.2). The workshop is structured in a way that increases regional cooperation, through joint training and the sharing of experiences and case studies and will build on concepts and results in the latest IPCC report (Climate Change 2014: Impacts, Adaptation, and Vulnerability) and the outcomes of the Paris Agreement.
