Abstract:
Research into the state and variability of the Southern Hemisphere climate has increased in recent years, yet there is still a lot to learn. This presentation will discuss the mean state of the Southern Hemisphere circulation, and its variability on synoptic to interannual time scales. The talk will touch on the mechanism for and observed trends in the Southern Annular Mode (SAM), zonal wave structures, and ENSO teleconnections. I will also discuss trends in Antarctic sea ice extent, why the Arctic and Antarctic behave so differently, and how regional sea ice concentration is modulated by the atmospheric circulation.
