General aims
  1. Continue and further develop the ADRICOSM forecasting system for the Adriatic Sea and its coastal areas with particular emphasis for the Montenegro coastal area;
  2. Design and partially implement a monitoring system for the surface water cycle, the river runoff and the coastal area of Montenegro;
  3. Develop and validate modeling tools for the urban, surface, underground water and coastal currents in the Bojana river catchment and Montenegro coastal area, considering the transboundary nature of the system;
  4. Develop a short term (several days) forecasting capability for hydrology, coastal currents and river basin runoff;
  5. Produce IPCC climate change scenario impact studies for the next decades in connection with the water and sediment quality in the Bojana river and the Montenegro coastal area.

CMCC Role

Within the framework of Adricosm-Star CMCC is responsible for:

  • WP6: Downscaling of atmospheric IPCC climate scenarios;
  • WP8: Project Management;

The activities of WP6 are aimed at the development of scenarios for the period 2000-2030 in terms of water cycle changes in the Montenegro area, river runoff variability (in particular for the Bojana river), sediment transport changes in coastal area, and coastal water quality changes. CMCC provides the boundary conditions for the hydrological, hydraulic and ocean models under different IPCC climate change scenarios for this period in order to investigate the forementioned topics. Additionally, CMCC effort is to assure the most accurate and efficient management to the Project in order to achieve all its estabilished goals. In details the management is focused on the fulfillment of the project time line, on convening meetings, on providing assistance for scientific and administrative reporting, on designing and maintaining project web pages.

Activity

The project analyzes four environmental compartments :

  • atmosphere-climate, in particular for the  large Montenegro atmospheric area;
  • oceanography, for the Montenegro and Albanian coastal areas;
  • hydrology, for the Bojana river and the Delta area with consideration of the Albanian affluent;
  • urban waters, for the town of Ulcinj.

Each one of these compartments is beeing explored through an observational and a modelling program that at the end of the project should produce a monitoring and forecasting system for the urban and non-urban waters in the coastal area and the coastal currents. Consequently the main activities of the project can be gathered into :

  • Monitoring activities
  • Modelling activities
  • Information System activities

mainly focused on the Bojana river catchment and delta area.
The last very important activity of the project is the construction of an Information Management System – the Adricosm-Star GeoPortal – which consists of a very useful and efficient instrument to :

  • provide basic services to ADRICOSM STAR partners and users
  • highlight and freely exchange partners products and services
  • start the implementation of INSPIRE compliant Information System (based on discovery service, viewing service, downloading service, transformation service).

The GeoPortal is accessible on the page : http://moon.santateresa.enea.it/Star/index.htm.
