General aims

The “International Forum on Climate Governance” (IFCG) aims to spark a debate on initiatives at the sectoral, national, regional and international level, designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to support the adaptation of the economic and environmental systems to the changing climate patterns.

The Forum – in addition to the CMCC, the Fondazione Giorgio Cini and the Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei – gathers international research groups, climate change policy experts, negotiators, representatives of international and national institutions, environmental NGOs and representatives of pools, and focuses on the political dimension of climate change. In particular on:

  • the long-term impacts of climate change on socio-economic systems and their institutions, including their reliability, within the development of the science of climate change;
  • the structural change that will ensue, the sectoral and geographical distribution of these impacts and their role particularly in developing countries, and their global repercussions (migration, wars, financial crises);
  • the international negotiations on policies for the control of climate change and the definition of governance models for climate change (policies and institutions).

CMCC Role

The Climate Impacts and Policies. An Economic Assessment (CIP) division of the CMCC coordinates the project, hosted at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini on the Island of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice.

Activity

The Forum’s activities are developed through the organisation of events of international relevance, seminars, round tables, workshops and the implementation of a training programme targeted to researchers and government officials from developing countries.

The events are characterised by interdisciplinary and intercultural participation of experts in different disciplines from different world regions. The crucial common denominator is the interaction with the national and international political institutions and with NGOs and company organisations.The themes on the agenda are analysed from both a scientific and a political approach. Special emphasis is placed on the positions of the various stakeholders in view of identifying – within the opportunities of debate offered by the Forum – an area of shared interests that may evolve into concrete policy proposals in the field of climate change mitigation and adaptation.
