IS-ENES – Infrastructure for the European Network for Earth System Modelling

ENES, through IS-ENES, promotes the development of a common distributed modelling research infrastructure in Europe in order to facilitate the development and exploitation of climate models and better fulfill the societal needs with regards to climate change issues.

General aims

IS-ENES will :

  • Foster the integration of the European climate and Earth system modeling community through the development of the future ENES strategy, the exchange of expertise and the development of training activities. Develop a virtual Earth System Modeling Resource Centre (v.E.R.C.) to integrate the different distributed facilities currently existing or developed during the project
  • Foster the development of Earth System Models for the understanding of climate change by enhancing model documentation and developing a service on common evaluation of the European ESMs through networking activities and joint research acivities
  • Foster high-end simulations enabling to better understand and predict future climate change by developing a common strategy, by enhancing the interface with and access to the EU large infrastructures DEISA2 and PRACE, by improving model performance on different computer architectures
  • Foster the application of Earth system model simulations to better predict and understand future climate change impacts by enhancing the service around model results following the INSPIRE EU directive and developing more efficient tools to access data. Enhance the interaction with decision makers and users communities, mainly concerned by climate change impact studies, through service activity and joint research development on data access as well as more adapted indicators.

CMCC Role

Three CMCC divisions are involved in this project: Scientific Computing and Operation (SCO), Numerical Applications and Scenarios (ANS) and Impacts on Soil and Coast (ISC).

SCO is involved in three work packages focused on : the definition of Prototype ESM Grid environment; on the portability, performance analysis and improvement of ESM models; on enhancing the link between the data services provided within the Grid Relational Catalog project (GRelC), with the OGC web services, in particular the Catalogue Service Web standard interface (CSW).

ISC works on setting a suite of e-resources/tools and guidance/expertise on transverse themes to foster interaction between climate and impac/decision maker communities.

ANS is involved on Strengthening the European Network on Earth System Modelling by producing a proper documentation of the ESMs currently developed in Europe, including a description of their component models and their software technical environment, based on a specific standard, the Common Information Model (CIM) developed in the METAFOR project. ANS contributes also on the preparation of the ENES strategy with regards to the HPC-ecosystem.


Expected results

Within IS-ENES, networking activities will increase the cohesion of the European ESM community and advance a coherent European Network for Earth System modelling. Joint research activities will improve the efficient use of ESMs, high-performance computers, model evaluation tool sets, access to model results, and will develop prototype climate services for the impact community.

IS-ENES will provide services on models and model results both to modelling groups and to the users of model results, including the impact community.

The v.E.R.C.-portal will be the key-component to communicate and deliever the results of the different work packages to the climate community and to users of climate model results.


Activity
  • preparing the ENES community for PRACE and DESA2 Prepare for future HPC architectures and infrastructure (PRACE and DEISA2) and elaborating the ENES strategy with regards to HPC-Ecosystems
  • development of a prototype of ESM Grid Environment
  • defining an ESM Evaluation suite and analyzing performance aspects of both individual component models and ESMs constructed
  • contributing on the Development of the Operational Services Package namely for climate data access
  • design, implement, integrate and test of use case-related services within the e-impact-portal prototype.
