OBJECTIVES
Lectures and practicals will cover a number of different techniques for ocean remote sensing.
Starting from some basic theoretical considerations, the student will then be introduced to the application contexts and, finally, to some quantitative considerations. The school is expected to give participants full awareness on the advanced satellite techniques as well as of their impact on understanding and modelling climate change.

MAIN TOPICS
Satellite oceanography. Open-ocean and coastal altimetry. Ocean microwave scattering and simulation. Ocean salinity measurements. Microwave ocean monitoring. Satellite data assimilation in ocean models.

ORGANISATION OF LECTURES
The school is gauged at postgraduated students, post-docs and early-career researchers. Participants are expected to attend the full course. The school lectures will be given in the morning; laboratory practicals and individual study will take place in the afternoon. The language of the school will be English.

CREDITS AND GRADES
The Summer school gives recognition to the activities of participating students, who are awarded 5 credits for full participation to the programme. Students requiring academic credits must complete all afternoon assignments for official evaluation. The grades will be given following the ECTS grading scale.

PARTICIPATION
The number of participants is limited to 20. Participants will be selected on a competitive basis. The organisation covers all costs for registration, accommodation and lunch. Students will cover their costs for travel and dinners. It is preferred that students bring their own computers.
The deadline for applications is May 28, 2010 and a
pplicants will be notified about acceptance by May 31, 2010.
