The Climate Simulations and Predictions Division of the Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change (CMCC, Bologna, Italy) invites applications for an extendable 2-year post-doc position in Arctic climate predictability and the analysis of high-impact polar weather systems.

The location is CMCC in Bologna, BO, Italy.

The successful candidate will work on the Blue-Action Project ( that is funded by the European Horizon 2020 Work Programme. The overarching goal of the project is to improve our current ability to describe, model and predict Arctic climate change and its impacts on Northern Hemisphere climate, weather and their extremes.

The successful candidate will investigate processes related to the predictability of Arctic climate changes and associated extremes, focussing on the seasonal-to-decadal range. More specifically, the relationship between the formation of polar lows and certain, more predictable, dynamical and thermodynamical characteristics of the large-scale flow will be studied and used to construct a statistical prediction model for the occurrence of polar lows, with particular emphasis on the North Atlantic sector. Also, by leveraging on the well-established CMCC expertise on numerical climate predictions, the candidate will design and perform ad-hoc, seasonal-to-multi-annual hindcast experiments to quantify the contribution of climatic changes in the Arctic and high-latitude North Atlantic to the predictability of the Northern Hemisphere climate. These experiments will be part of a multi-model coordinated effort that will carried out within the framework of Blue-Action.

The candidate should hold a PhD in climate sciences, meteorology, oceanography or other related field.

Experience with seasonal-to-decadal climate predictions, climate analysis, advanced statistics and handling of large data sets, as well as any previous research experience in synoptic and meso-scale atmospheric dynamics would be a strong plus. Programming skills (python, matlabi/ioctave, fortran, shell scripting, cdo and other equivalent tools) will be taken in high consideration, yet special emphasis will be given to the vigour of prior research work, scientific independence and the general suitability for meeting the project aims. Responsibility and the ability to work in a team are required.
