GEOCARBON – Operational Global Carbon Observing System

The main objective of this project is to coordinate the contribution of European and international leading research institutes toward the development of an Operational Global Integrated Carbon Observation and Analysis System.

Duration
36 months from 01/10/2011 to 01/01/2015

General aims

The main objective of this project is to coordinate the contribution of European and international leading research institutes toward the development of an Operational Global Integrated Carbon Observation and Analysis System.

Specific objectives are:

  • Provide an aggregated set of harmonized global carbon data information (integrating the land, ocean, atmosphere and human dimension)
  • Develop improved Carbon Cycle Data Assimilation Systems (CCDAS)
  • Define the specifications for an operational Global Carbon Observing System
  • Provide improved regional carbon budgets of Amazon and Central Africa
  • Provide comprehensive and synthetic information on the annual sources and sinks of CO2 for the globe and for large ocean and land regions
  • Improve the assessment of global CH4 sources and sinks and develop the CH4 observing system component
  • Provide an economic assessment of the value of an enhanced Global Carbon Observing System
  • Strengthen the effectiveness of the European (and global) Carbon Community participation in the GEO system.

CMCC Role

CMCC participates in this project with three Divisions : IAFENT, CIP and ANS

  • CMCC-IAFENT is the project coordinator and leads the Component 8 on dissemination and project management. Other activities include research on carbon stocks and fluxes in Africa (CMP4), and production of synthesis information in the frame of CMP5.
  • CMCC-CIP will coordinate the activity related to the cost-benefit analysis of establishing a Global Carbon Observation system.
  • CMCC-ANS will participate in CMP2 contributing to the following tasks:
  1. implementation of an ocean CCDAS using the variational method;
  2. production of reanalyses of air-sea carbon fluxes and attribution of possible changes to the system components.

Activity

Collection and analysis of different observations data streams, and their integration in a common database

  • Synthesis of atmospheric, terrestrial and oceanic carbon cycle data from model data fusion through a Carbon Cycle Data Assimilation System (CCDAS)
  • Global Carbon Observing System accuracy requirements and network design
  • Case studies and implementation of a CCDAS in the Amazon and tropical Africa
  • Synthesis of integrated CO2 budgets and their uncertainties
  • Integration and synthesis of the global CH4 cycle
  • Costs-benefits (monetary and non monetary) analysis
  • Interface with GEO, Outreach and Project Coordination
