SE-CMEMS – Service Evolution of the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service

The project will develop and test a new technique for producing dynamically-based but highly efficient statistical observation operators for assimilation of daily satellite SST observations that could be easily implemented with any data assimilation technique.

Expected results

The intent of this project is to provide an alternative approach that may streamline the progress toward improving the SST-DA in different operational DA systems in CMEMS. In this way the project would enrich overall DA technology available in CMEMS in support of improving the capacity to perform optimal assessments of SST observation impacts.

Activity

The CMCC will:

1) acquiring the satellite SST retrieval data and coupling with the GOTM modeled data starting with the regional Mediterranean domain and moving on to the global;

2) adapt the CCA software from the prior studies to application in this project and the develop software for computing the SSSTOOs starting from a sample regional model-observation data, and then expanding to the full production for the entire global data set;

3) update the selected DA systems for assimilation of daily SST will be carried out in parallel with the HCMR followed with implementation of SSSTOOs.
