General aims

to deepen the knowledges related to the impacts of climatic changes on the Mediterranean marine environment by focusing on sedimentary processes, physical processes, biogeochemical cycles (role of the Mediterranean basin in the global cycle of C), biodiversity.

Activity

VECTOR studies some hydrographic basins and coastal areas with reference to

  • the variation in the regime of the winds and their effect on the wave motion, on the tide and on the coastal currents
  • the variation on the atmospheric precipitations and their impact on the tranport of sediments in coastal areas
  • the variation of the sea-level and to the isostasy (scenarios for the following 25, 50, 100 years)

… it studies the Italian seas with reference to

  • the kinetics of transfer of CO2 to the interface air-sea and its storage through the mixing between superficial and deep waters
  • the estimate of CO2 absorbed from the ocean and its variability in space and time
  • the processes of vertical tranfer of C linked to its tranformation in the trophic net
  • the interment of C in the sediment and its escape from the system on secolar and temporal scales

… and the global ocean with reference to

the development of models of simulations for the estimate of the exchanges of CO2 to be applied in areas of interest like for example the Meridional ocean and the Mediterranean
