EU finds agreement on energy efficiency

The European Commission, the Parliament and Council of Member States agreed on the text of the Energy Efficiency Directive early on Thursday (June 14, 2012). Specifically EU negotiators managed to set out binding measures to improve energy savings in all end use sectors by 1.5 percent per year in the period 2014-2020, allowing a limited exemption for industries covered by the ETS. In addition, the agreed text includes the possibility to launch an intergovernmental carbon market for the public buildings sector.
