It is an international event promoted by Climate-KIC. It brings together the challenges of the world’s cities with the people who have the passion and ability to solve them. Climathon attracts innovators, entrepreneurs, students and professionals to create innovative solutions to cities climate challenges.

The Challenge

Which innovative, technological and sustainable solutions may be defined for monitoring coastal erosion along the Lecce coastline and plan coast development accordingly?
How can Lecce coastal tourism be boosted, taking into account the environmental risks connected to climate change and erosion and protecting the coastal and marine ecosystems?

Over the last few years, Lecce city centre has been interested by a strong economic and tourism development. However, its coastal areas along the Adriatic Sea are still suffering and excluded from this economic growth, due to poorly planned and implemented investments.

Moreover, climate change and coastal erosion poses additional burden on the coastline, making it vulnerable and subject to environmental risks.

Generically defined as the invasion of the sea over land, coastal erosion  can have different shapes and causes, including climatic, hydrological, ecological and mostly human factors. As such, while Lecce coastline represents a key element for the environment and the activities of the city, coastal erosion is a phenomenon with consequences not only related to environmental protection, but also to economic and safety issues.

Therefore, new approaches are needed to support a more synergic and durable, physical and economic development of the coastline. The better scientific knowledge on the coastal erosion, and the identification of its causes should be linked with the capacity to alert on extreme events and to plan for the future in an holistic manner.
