Computational requirements of climate numerical models increase with their complexity and resolution. The development of high-resolution models is prohibitive in sequential mode and can be supported by high-performance computing systems if an efficient parallel implementation is available. Here comes the need of developing parallel code able to fully exploit the capacity of the current parallel architectures. In this seminar, the activity carried out to parallelize the sequential Shallow Water Hydrodynamic Finite Element Model (SHYFEM) is presented. The Message-Passing parallel programming paradigm has been used to develop the first parallel version of the SHYFEM model. Parallelization steps are shown, starting from the unstructured grid partitioning problem up to the parallelization of the Free Surface Equation, implicitly solved through the integration of external optimized libraries. The SANIFS regional configuration, developed by CMCC, is considered as test case to demonstrate the speedup of the implemented parallel solution.
