Description of the SCO division

Division Head : Prof. Giovanni Aloisio (giovanni.aloisio@unile.it)

The research activity of the division Scientific Computing and Operations (SCO) comprises three macroactivities : High End  Computing, Advanced Data Management, HPC Systems Management.

SCO 1

High End Computing (HEC)
The mission of the High End Computing (HEC) Macro Activity is to support the development of the end-to-end scientific simulation environment envisioned by the CMCC strategic plan.  To this end the HEC macro activity encompasses: optimization and parallelization of the available and adopted models (both climate models and models related to the climate impacts); benchmark and evaluation of the new emerging computational technologies, learn to get best performance from them; enhance tools for visualization and data analysis; create software frameworks to facilitate scientific advancement through interdisciplinary collaborations.

SCO 2

Advanced Data Management (ADM)
This Macro Activity concerns with the management (classification, delivery, optimized access, etc.) of climate datasets/experiments. A Data Grid architecture/solution has been chosen in order to (i) ease the management of such distributed data environment for climate change, (ii) deploy a uniform (i.e. from the security point of view) set of data grid services (data grid plane), (iii) provide the proper basis for higher level and distributed activities, (iv) ease the management of several set of users through the virtual organization concept and (v) create a unified, advanced and complete environment for climate scientists.

SCO 3

HPC Systems Management (HSM)
The whole HPC, storage and networking infrastructure of the CMCC is managed by the System Management Group. The main task of this group is to deploy and operate the advanced computational infrastructure to enable computational research activities of CMCC research divisions.

Objectives :

  • Design and development of a Problem Solving Environment for climate change
  • Design and development of grid applications allowing a transparent, secure and efficient data sharing, access and  management
  • Design and development of sequential algorithms to optimize numerial simulations
  • Design and development of grid-based systems providing efficient data  analysis and visualization
  • Security management of the overall infrastructure at the Centre
  • System management of the scalar and vector infrastructures

Ongoing projects

The SCO division  participates into the project :

  • IS/ENES - Infrastructure for the European Network for Earth System Modelling, European Commission, 2009-2013
