Oceanthon 2021 is the second edition of the digital hackathon entirely dedicated to innovation in the marine domain.
The challenge
The main theme of Oceanthon 2021 is “Ocean&Climate“, and participants will compete to address the increasingly important challenge related to the climate crisis, with the aim of finding interdisciplinary solutions to face global change effects on society and the environment.
The future to come is uncertain, and full of challenges, but scientists have acknowledged that a healthy ocean is a great ally to fight this climate global crisis. It is imperative to maintain the quality of marine ecosystems and restore those which have been degraded.
As UNESCO, we are convinced that the ocean represents a great opportunity to tackle the challenges of climate change mitigation and adaptation.
Many innovative solutions and pilot projects have already demonstrated that it is possible to restore marine biodiversity, to preserve the ecological functions and services of the marine ecosystems, and to implement ocean-based solutions for climate change adaptation and for increasing resilience.

Take part in the competition
This second edition is dedicated to the Mediterranean area, and for this reason the call is open to both individuals and trained teams from all Mediterranean coastal states.
The initiative is addressed to students, the scientific community, the world of developers, designers, artists, engineers, experts in communication, social sciences and business who are ready to use their skills and entrepreneurial spirit and join forces to develop ideas that can respond to present and future challenges while promoting a greater knowledge of the ocean, its protection and the sustainable use of marine resources.
In this “Ocean&Climate” hackathon, we are looking for new, unconventional and avant-garde solutions to address ocean and climate challenges.
