The 3D biological pump in the Canary Upwelling System: are small scales driving the organic carbon lateral redistribution

Abstract
The lateral redistribution of the organic material can play a central role in the spatial decoupling of sources and sinks of organic carbon. In this talk I first present a model-based quantification of the long range offshore transport of organic carbon from the Canary Upwelling System to the open North Atlantic up to 2000 km from the coast, discussing its impact on the offshore heterotrophic activity. Then, I quantify the contribution of mesoscale eddies and coastal filaments to the total offshore flux of organic carbon, and discuss the implications of the present results for the understanding and modeling of the marine biological pump.
