The CMCC Foundation is part of the European-wide greenhouse gas research infrastructure ICOS (Integrated Carbon Observation System) and coordinates its Ecosystem Thematic Center, which is responsible for data management, processing, and network coordination of the ecosystem stations monitoring greenhouse gas fluxes.

Co-organized by the AVENGERS, EYE-CLIMA and PARIS projects, the upcoming ICOS Talks will discuss fluorinated emissions derived from atmospheric observations and their implications for carbon monitoring and policy.

Talks agenda:

  • Introduction by Dr Rona Thompson (NILU, EYE-CLIMA coordinator)
  • Talk 1: Andreas Stohl (University of Vienna): F-gas inversions at the example of SF6 and PFCs: new developments and limitations
  • Talk 2: Andreas Engel (Goethe University Frankfurt): Expanding the European network for F-gas observations: challenges and opportunities
  • Discussion and wrap-up

Professor Andreas Stohl is Vice Dean for Research and Internationalization at the University of Vienna, Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy, University of Vienna, Austria. Andreas Stohl studies and models transport processes in the atmosphere. He has been the main developer of the open-source Lagrangian models FLEXTRA and FLEXPART. From the start of his career, he was a strong proponent of the open-source movement, making code, data and research results openly available to the public.

Dr Andreas Engel is Associate Professor for Experimental Atmospheric Research at the Institute for Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences, Goethe University Frankfurt. The basis of his research are experimental studies of the chemical composition of the atmosphere. Recently, he has become more interested in tropospheric research, in the tropopause region and in questions regarding the coupling of climate change and stratospheric ozone. Andreas is also a work package leader of EU project PARIS.
