CMCC Seminar in Bologna “Towards low carbon intensity routes via ocean currents and waves”

The seminar will be held at the CMCC premises in Bologna, Viale Berti Pichat 6/2 – Meeting Room (Second Floor).

Abstract:
Maritime transport represents a not negligible share (about 3%) of global CO2 emissions. Decarbonisation pathways include operational measures aimed at improving the energy efficiency of shipping, and voyage optimisation is a possible option. VISIR (www.visir-model.net) ship routing system is being developed to consider the impact of both ocean currents and waves. These fields can be employed for improving the energy efficiency of a maritime route.  In this talk I will present a few preliminary results in this direction from the H-2020 AtlantOS project. Furthermore, validation of VISIR paths through a comparison with the path planning model developed at MIT (Cambridge, USA) will be briefly discussed.
