The National Space Research Agency (INPE) announced this week that deforestation levels in Brazil have dropped this year to the lowest figure observed since satellite monitoring of the problem began, falling by 14 percent from the previous year’s figure (7,500 square kilometers) to 6,450 square kilometres in 2009- 2010.
Brazil has an ambitious 80-percent reduction target in deforestation by 2010, which is also critical in achieving Brazil’s target to cut emissions by 36.1-38.9 per cent, as it represents a cut of nearly 25 per cent of projected emissions by 2020.
