PhD scholarships for climate change studies at Bologna and Naples Universities

Reducing climate change risks on the Mediterranean coasts and understanding the transport of plastic waste in the sea. The CMCC Foundation contributes with two scholarships opportunities to the PhD program in “Future Earth, Climate Change and Societal Challenges” at Bologna University and the PhD program on “Environmental phenomena and risks” at Parthenope University of Naples. Deadlines for applications on 19 and 20 October 2021.

University of Bologna “Alma Mater Studiorum”, PhD program in “Future Earth, Climate Change and Societal Challenges”

In the context of the PhD program in “Future Earth, Climate Change and Societal Challenges” at Bologna University “Alma Mater Studiorum”, a PhD scholarship has been made available by the CMCC Foundation on “High-resolution modelling of coastal inundation, its impacts along the Mediterranean coasts, with the aim of understanding and reducing the risk along our shores in view of climate change”.

The activity will be based in Ravenna at the Centro Interdipartimentale di Ricerca per le Scienze Ambientali – CIRSA. Below, a detailed description of the involved activities:

Coastal inundation associated with extreme storms have wide socio-economic consequences, which are projected to increase in view of the ongoing climate change. Despite this, there is a clear lack of information and prediction skill in coastal flood mapping.

The PhD will develop a high-resolution modelling framework able to capture the combined effects of sea level rise, storm surges, seiches and waves in proximity of the shore, and assess the relative skill of different inundation models and coupling strategies.

The model data will be used to quantify the impact of coastal flooding at populated areas and critical infrastructures, and to understand how climate changes will affect future coastal risk. The results will provide the stakeholders with scientific basis for a timely coastal adaptation along our shores, contributing to the implementation of the 3rd pillar of the EUSAIR strategy, the EUStrategy for the Adriatic-Ionian Region (environment quality), and to fulfilling the EU Climate Adaptation Strategy in the Mediterranean context.

The interested candidates should apply by Oct 20, 2021 at 11:59 PM, through the website of the university, by registering at:

https://studenti.unibo.it/sol/welcome.htm?siteLanguage=en

and following the instructions described in the call (art. 3, how to apply) (https://www.unibo.it/en/teaching/phd/2021-2022-pon-scholarships-call/attachments/37th-cycle-pon-call-for-applications).

In the application, the candidates will have to select the position number 5, which corresponds to the theme described above (see the PhD program table here).

Parthenope University of NaplesPhD program on Environmental phenomena and risks

Another opportunity comes from the Parthenope University of Naples, with the PhD program on Environmental phenomena and risks.
The field of research concerns the observation of a wide range of environmental phenomena and their possible consequences as situations of potential risk and their mitigation.

In particular, the CMCC Foundation contributes to the realization of the PhD with a scholarship on the theme “Fisica del trasporto verticale di rifiuti plastici in mare e processi principali di interazione tra plastiche e biota” (SSD GEO/12 AZIONE GREEN).

The interested candidates should apply by Oct 19, 2021.
