The extreme events of the 2011

Posted on

The earthquake and tsunami in Japan, the East Africa drought and Somalia famine, the floods in China, in Thailand, in Brazil and in Australia, the destructive earthquakes in New Zealand and in the Himalayan region, the Joplin tornado in U.S. and the tropical storm Washi in Philippines, the forest-fire in Arizona and New Mexico, the several volcanic eruptions around the world.
As the year before, the online journal ThinktoSustain.com sums up a year of impressive environmental disasters. The new feature is a follow-up of the previous “Major Environmental Disasters and Campaigns: Year 2010” and is an effort to maintain high the interest in such themes and to continue to report every similar extreme events that have happened since the beginning of this year.
When you take into account each environmental catastrophe individually, authors say, these incidents could appear just as another environmental calamity, having local or country-wide consequences. But consider the picture globally and you will see the magnitude of it all suddenly becoming apparent and terrifying. Understanding and studying carefully such violent weather fluctuations is getting more and more urgent and important.
