Gianandrea’s research activity aims to improve Maritime Transportation by means of meteo-oceanographic data.
Since 2012, he has been designing, implementing, and coordinating the development of the open-source ship routing model VISIR. A service for on-demand computation of least-time routes was realized in 2015 (www.visir-nav.com), while in 2021 a service for least-CO2 ferry routes depending on wave and sea current forecasts became operational (www.gutta-visir.eu).
The VISIR model was documented in several publications (www.visir-model.net).
Among Gianandrea’s research interests is the environmental impact of maritime transportation, especially in reference to climate change.
Gianandrea holds a PhD in Theoretical Physics issued from the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin – Germany and a MSc degree in Physics from the Università degli Studi di Pisa – Italy.
He loves nature, sports, and reading.
