ABSTRACT:
Climate change impacts on Mediterranean agriculture are expected to be very severe. Adaptation policies to climate change in the area are determinant to assure ecosystem functioning. and resilient rural development. Diversity-based agricultural adaptation measures provide feasible means to minimize risk and secure productivity in the face of climate change. There is growing evidence in agroecology literature that diversified landscapes, and therefore greater landscape complexity, is correlated to higher biodiversity conservation and ecosystem services performed, but only a few contributions assess the economic impact of diversified agricultural landscape on productivity and resilience. The goal of the paper is to assess the interplay among landscape agrobiodiversity, climate and land returns in the Euro-Mediterranean region within a cross-sectional Ricardian framework. We find that ecosystem services provided by agricultural landscapes contribute to sustaining the mean land value and that individual farm benefits from landscape diversity.
