The FERS course “AI and Machine Learning for Earth System Modeling and Prediction” explores state-of-the-art applications of machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) in Earth system science. In the context of rapidly growing climate datasets and continuous advances in computational methods, the course provides participants with the tools to improve the understanding, modeling, and prediction of Earth system processes.

Designed for graduate students, the program focuses on the integration of data-driven approaches with physical modeling. Participants will gain hands-on experience with advanced methodologies, including deep learning, generative models, hybrid physics–ML approaches, and uncertainty quantification.

Practical sessions will address key challenges posed by complex dynamical systems—such as the atmosphere, ocean, and cryosphere—equipping participants with skills to tackle real-world scientific problems.

This initiative is part of the Future Earth Research School (FERS), an international school entirely focused on environmental sustainability and climate change coordinated by CMCC Foundation, Advanced Training and Education Center (ATEC). FERS will offer a strategic overview on how to model our climate system and deal with future global challenges, building a fertile ground for innovation and new research pathways.
