The Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change organize the “Bottom-up Climate Adaptation Strategies towards a Sustainable Europe” BASE project meeting, which will be held in Venice on February 14-15, 2013.

Objectives

The main aim of the workshop is to clearly identify information exchange flows interconnecting BASE WPs and define in practice type, format and timing of that information. Specific bilateral interconnections involve on the one hand WP2 – Responses to a changing climate: knowledge utilization and policy integration – and WP7 – Improving policy coherence and effectiveness for adaptation – and on the other hand WP3 – Models and Tool development for top-down approaches to integrated assessment – and WP6 – Integrating adaptation. Nonetheless, case studies developed under WP4 – Coordination and management of case Studies – and WP5 – European cases of adaptation: bottom-up Analysis – are expected to provide useful inputs to both areas. How exactly, is an additional matter for discussion.

About the project

The Bottom-up Climate Adaptation Strategies towards a Sustainable Europe (BASE) project will address the need for research on sustainable climate adaptation strategies, which promote interactions between bottom-up and top-down activities and assessments. BASE seeks to evaluate the environmental, social and economic impacts, costs and benefits, policy coherence and stakeholder and citizen perceptions of different climate adaptation pathways from an interdisciplinary perspective. BASE findings will feed into Climate-ADAPT portal and provide adaptation support tools for policy development at national and European levels, hereunder the EU 2013 adaptation strategy. The overall objective of BASE is to both enhance and analyse an interdisciplinary knowledge base to support the development of climate adaptation strategies. Support to decision making will be provided on both adaptation strategies and pathways to improve the design of action plans across Europe. BASE will explore the synergies and inconsistencies within and between top-down and bottom up methodologies and goals of climate adaptation.
