Abstract:

We live in a rapidly urbanizing world. In the next 30 years, some 70 million people will move to urban areas every single year. By 2050, two-thirds of the global population will live in cities. We are already seeing the impacts of climate change which, unchecked, will subject populations to untold risk and suffering, push already struggling services to the brink and undermine city government’s efforts to protect their citizens. The first step to addressing climate risk is to measure and understand it. In this webinar, we will present an analysis of data reported through the CDP-ICLEI unified reporting system by over 620 cities in 2018 regarding the climate risks and impacts and their adaptation goals and actions. We will also highlight areas where the data demonstrates room for improvement, particularly focusing on the need to identify risks and impacts over the longer term (i.e. beyond 2050). Drawing on data reported in 2019, we will discuss several case studies of innovative actions to address specific risks, focusing on nature based solutions.

Speaker’s short bio:

Catherine Higham is the Regional Manager for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa on CDP’s Cities, States, and Regions team. CDP is a global environmental impact non-profit helping investors, companies, cities, states and regions assess their environmental impact and take urgent action to build a truly sustainable economy.

Catherine comes to the world of international climate action after spending many years specialising in policy and advocacy work on international human rights issues. Before joining CDP, Catherine worked at the University Sustainability Initiative at the University of British Columbia where she coordinated the UBC Climate Hub.
