CMCC Seminar – Dynamical and Statistical Approaches to the study of Medicanes

SPEAKER
Davide Faranda – Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l’Environnement – LSCE/IPSL France

ABSTRACT
Medicanes (Mediterranean Hurricanes) are mesoscale cyclones with a diameter usually smaller than 300 km, a rounded structure and a cloudless area at the center . The mesoscale cyclones are frequently associated with wind, heavy precipitation and changes in temperature, generating high risk situations such as flash floods and extreme windstorm. I will discuss the dynamical and statistical properties of medicanes reconstructed over the past 60 years, starting from documentary sources. In particular, I will focus on i) the predictability and persistence properties of the large scale atmospheric circulations associated to those events ii) the energy cycle and the energy cascade in the different stages of the medicane lifecycle iii) the changes in the large scale patterns associated to medicanes in climate change scenarios RCP4.5 and RCP 8.5.
