“Science, data, and services: working together for climate action”, this is the guiding theme for the ICOS Science Conference 2026. The Conference will be held from September 15th to 17th in Lund, Sweden and online. This biennial conference, organized by the ICOS community, aims to bring together scientists and experts working in greenhouse gases and biogeochemical cycles.

The programme will feature a broad range of scientific and interdisciplinary sessions addressing greenhouse gas research, policy-making, climate education, and the development of new instrumentation. Session themes and the scientific programme will be defined by a committee of leading climate scientists.

The complete list of sessions can be found here.

CMCC’s Role in ICOS
The CMCC plays a role within the ICOS framework, particularly through its leadership of the Ecosystem Thematic Centre (ETC), which oversees more than 100 greenhouse gas monitoring stations across Europe. Under the direction of Professor Dario Papale, based in the CMCC Viterbo offices (Italy), the ETC coordinates the measurement of key environmental parameters such as energy fluxes, CO2, and other greenhouse gases.

CMCC is responsible for supporting and guiding the monitoring stations, ensuring the transmission of data to the ICOS repository, managing metadata ingestion and standardization, and processing the incoming data daily. The results will be made freely available in line with open science and FAIR principles.
