More information
How is the Mediterranean connected with other regions of the Earth? Which are the risks and costs of overshoot? This and more questions will be addressed during the ACCREU-CROSSEU-SPARCCLE side event at COP31 on 10 November, from 11:30-13:00 TRT (9:30-11:00 CET) at the Cryosphere Pavilion (Antalya EXPO Center, Antalya, Türkiye) titled “Impacts of climate overshoot and the case for ambitious action”.
The side event sees the participation of CMCC Principal Scientist Francesco Bosello, among other speakers from IIASA, SPARCCLE, Assessing Climate Change risk in Europe (ACCREU), CrossEU and Meteo Romania. It will highlight how new research shows converging evidence on the socioeconomic cost of climate overshoot across regions and sectors and how average-based risk metrics systematically understate compound and extreme impacts, masking how fast the window for action is narrowing. The session will explore recent advances in socioeconomic risk assessment, including storyline and stresstest scenarios, risk assessment and adaptation tailored to Alpine and coastal regions, and new insights on inequalities and vulnerabilities posed by climate overshoot.
The side event takes place in the broader framework of the “COP31: Connecting Antarctica, Pacific Island states, and coastal nations” panel at the Cryosphere Pavilion, scheduled for 10 November from 10:00 to 20:00 TRT (8:00-18:00 CET) and can be accessed livestreamed.
This event is one of the several CMCC contributions to COP31, the 31st edition of the Conference of the Parties (COP) organized by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
COP31 is a major United Nations climate conference that brings together world leaders, non-governmental organizations, and experts to negotiate and advance global actions to address climate change. The conference will focus on implementing international climate agreements and promoting sustainable development through priority actions to tackle the climate crisis.
All side events hosted by the COP31 Cryosphere Pavilion will be recorded and livestreamed; consult YouTube channel link.
