Pangeo is a flexible open-source platform that combines tools from the Python ecosystem that allows anyone to conduct Big Data geoscience with the mission to cultivate an ecosystem in which the next generation of open-source analysis tools for ocean, atmosphere and climate science can be developed, distributed, and sustained. These tools must be scalable in order to meet the current and future challenges of big data. It can be run on laptops, HPC facilities and on the Cloud. The benefits of using Pangeo in a cloud environment for the USGS-led HyTEST (the Hydro-Terrestrial Earth System Testbed) project will be discussed, as well as the lessons learned and challenges faced.
