Dr Ivano Alogna is the Senior Research Fellow in Environmental and Climate Change Law at the British Institute of International and Comparative Law (BIICL), where he leads the Institute’s programme in this field. He is the founder and director of the Global Toolbox on Corporate Climate Litigation, an innovative platform advancing comparative research and practical resources for climate litigation involving companies worldwide.
He contributes to global environmental governance as Co-Lead of the Climate Litigation Cluster for the Climate Change Law Expert Group within the World Commission on Environmental Law (WCEL) of the IUCN. He also serves on the Taskforce on the Rights of Nature and as an Expert for the ‘Environmental Law and Policy’ Commission of the IUCN French Committee. He is a member of
the Advisory Board of the European Law Institute (ELI) – UK Hub.
Previously, Dr Alogna served as General Rapporteur for the Global Pact for the Environment project, led by the French Constitutional Council, and contributed to the ELI project on “Ecocide”.
In addition to his academic roles, he is a licensed Attorney-at-Law at the Bar of Milan. As an Adjunct Professor in Environmental Law at prestigious universities—including University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, University of Bologna, and Catholic University of Lyon—he teaches courses on International, European and Comparative Environmental Law, Climate Change Law and Litigation, Environmental Liability, and Private and Comparative Law. His teaching combines theory and practice, preparing the next generation of legal professionals to meet emerging global challenges. At BIICL, he has developed executive courses in climate change law and climate litigation, tailored for professionals from law firms, governments, NGOs, companies, international
organisations, and academia. He has also delivered judicial training sessions on these topics across every continent.
Dr Alogna’s research and publications—more than 40 titles including edited volumes, monographs, peer-reviewed book chapters and journal articles, reports, think pieces, policy responses, and in-depth analyses—span a broad spectrum of topics, from climate litigation, civil and criminal liability, and corporate social responsibility, to energy law, human rights, sustainable consumer law, and ecocide, across legal domains including Environmental Law, Private Law, International Law, EU Law, and Comparative Law. His scholarly contributions include co-editing Climate Change Litigation: Global Perspectives (Brill, 2021), cited by the IPCC in its 6th Assessment Report, and Climate Change Litigation in Europe: Regional, Comparative and Sectoral Perspectives (Intersentia, 2024). His PhD thesis, The Circulation of Legal Models in the Environmental Field: Toward a Global Environmental Law, which received the Special Jury Prize from the French Society of Environmental Law (SFDE), is forthcoming with LGDJ, Paris.
He holds a PhD in Comparative and International Environmental Law from the Sorbonne Law School (Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne), an LLM in Environmental Law (Paris 1 & Paris 2), and additional degrees in Law, Environmental Law, and Comparative Law from institutions in France, Italy, and Spain. His international academic experience includes research stays at the University of Glasgow, Louisiana State University, SOAS University of London, the Indian Law Institute, and the University of Wuhan.
His research interests include Comparative Law, Private Law, Legal Theory, and Legal History.
