The CMCC Bassi Fellowship Program kicks off on October 15 with an inaugural lecture by Professor Ian Sue Wing – offering the first of many upcoming opportunities for leading figures in science, policy and education to make a lasting impact in the fields of climate science, resilience and economics at CMCC.

The CMCC Foundation is pleased to welcome the inaugural cohort of Bassi Fellows — six distinguished senior academics and researchers with demonstrated leadership in climate science, climate resilience, and climate economics. They join CMCC to support and advance its strategic climate research agenda.

Named after Laura Bassi – who became one of the first women to hold a university professorship in 1732 – the CMCC Fellowship Program honors her pioneering work, motivating leaders to go beyond established conventions and embrace innovation in academia and society.

CMCC Bassi Fellows are among the world’s most distinguished scientists and leaders. Selected for their outstanding achievements in academic and research institutions, government, multilateral, and nonprofit organizations they will have the unique opportunity to stimulate innovation and provide guidance, mentoring, and specialized expertise during their residencies. Alongside CMCC researchers the fellows will foster interdisciplinary collaboration and cultivate innovative solutions to complex climate challenges, further cementing CMCC’s position as the home of cutting edge climate science.

The CMCC Bassi Fellowship Program kicks off on October 15 with an inaugural CMCC Lecture by Professor Ian Sue Wing – a leading authority in environmental policy, professor at Boston University, and newly appointed CMCC Bassi Fellow. The lecture will focus on recent advances in the economic modeling of climate-related impacts and the critical role of resilience in shaping future outcomes.

The 2025/2026 Bassi fellows are:

  • Antonietta Capotondi, University of Colorado Boulder, expert in large-scale ocean circulation and climate extremes.
  • Dargan Frierson, University of Washington, expert in climate modeling and atmospheric/oceanic dynamics.
  • Igor Linkov, US Army Corps and Carnegie Mellon University, expert in risk and prevention management, developing methods and tools to measure resilience in interconnected networks, including environmental and energy systems.
  • Samantha Siedlecki, University of Connecticut, specializes in coastal oceanography, with expertise in biogeochemical dynamics under present and future climate conditions.
  • Ian Sue Wing, Boston University, leading authority in energy and environmental policy. His work involves characterizing the broader economic consequences of climate change impacts across different socio-economic sectors.

More on the upcoming CMCC lecture

As part of the Bassi Fellowship program, Prof. Ian Sue Wing, Department of Earth & Environment at Boston University, will deliver a lecture titled “Economic Modeling of Climate Change Impacts: Current Trends, New Directions” on 15 October 2025 at 12:00 CEST.

Prof. Wing, a leading authority in environmental policy and newly appointed CMCC Bassi Fellow, will present advances in economic modeling of climate-related impacts and the critical role of resilience in shaping future outcomes. His lecture will focus on the Adaptive Rolling Intertemporal Planning (ARIP) framework, a novel approach that integrates high-resolution climate projections with economic simulation models to explore how regional economies adapt over time to climate impacts, both anticipated and unexpected.
