CMCC Foundation at the opening week EXPO 2020 Dubai, official partner of the Italian Pavilion

Posted on

Climate science, sustainable development and ocean exploration will animate the Italy Pavilion at EXPO 2020 Dubai in virtue of the collaboration between the Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change (CMCC) and the General Commission for the Italian participation at Expo 2020 Dubai that will open its doors on 1 October.

The CMCC brings its techno-scientific contribution to Expo Dubai through the provision and visualization of weather-marine data, oceanographic modelling and marine applications, talks and events with international experts on critical issues such as the Global Coastal Ocean, and CoastPredict – endorsed by UNESCO as a programme under the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.

From global Ocean to Dubai: marine forecast in video

Every day, the video wall of the Italian Pavilion will show a visualization produced by CMCC with marine weather forecasts from the global ocean showing increasing levels of detail up to the sea conditions in the port of Dubai. An immersive experience obtained through the applications realized by CMCC with its scientific research and Supercomputing Centre, which is one of the most advanced in the world among those dedicated to climate change.

During the presentation day, Antonio Navarra will illustrate the contents that the CMCC is proposing at EXPO 2020 Dubai, in the Italian Pavilion, with particular reference to video applications on ocean forecasts.

October 8, 2021 – Italy Pavilion Anfiteatro, h. 16.30 – 18.00 (GST) | 14.30 – 16.00 (CEST)

The future of the Coastal Zone. Observing and Predicting the Global Coastal Ocean in support of sustainable economics and coastal policies

Understanding the Global Coastal Ocean in ever greater detail and its many facets is one of the most advanced challenges for societies and the world. The UN Decade of ocean science for sustainable development (https://oceandecade.org/), started in 2021, is a unique opportunity to advance knowledge, infrastructure and solutions for the ocean. Starting from “CoastPredict: observing and predicting the Global Coastal Ocean”, one of the endorsed UN Decade programmes that aims at redefining the global coastal ocean science and solutions for the coastal ocean we need for the future we want, the event offers an opportunity for dialogue between policy-makers, business representatives and science to tell the story of a world in great flux where the scientific community uses technological innovation to produce knowledge at ever greater levels of detail and decision-making.

Speakers: Nadia Pinardi (chair CoastPredict, CMCC, University of Bologna, Italy), Villy Kourafalou (co-chair CoastPredict, University of Miami, USA), Joaquìn Tintoré (co-chair CoastPredict, Balearic Islands Coastal Observing and Forecasting System & IMEDEA, Spain), Chris Davis (NCAR, USA), Albert Fisher (Head of GOOS program, UNESCO-IOC), Giovanni Sylos Labini (CEO, Planetek Italia), Philip Easthill (European Boating Industry).

The event will be streamed on the following channels:

October 2, 2021 – Italy Pavilion, h. 15.30 – 16.00 (GST) | 13.30 – 14.00 (CEST)

Grand Tour – Real time Ocean prediction: how high-resolution data support human societies and the environment – with Simona Masina

Discovering the Italy Pavilion and its installations with the people who conceived, designed, and built them: in this special and exclusive edition, the immersive experience offered by the Grand Tour is made even richer when following Simona Masina. The scientist of the Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change, Director of the Ocean Modelling and Data Assimilation Division, explains to visitors the Foundation’s contribution to the Italy Pavilion. Thanks to ground-breaking model design and construction techniques and the use of very high-resolution data, the CMCC’s ocean forecasting system keeps track of all maritime dimensions from a single scientific perspective which, from global Oceans, closes in on the coast of Dubai, to put information and forecasts at the service of human societies, ecosystems, and sustainable development.

October 3, 2021 – Italy Pavilion, h. 11.00 – 13.00 (GST) | 09.00 – 11.00 (CEST)

Venice, World Sustainability Capital

At the launch event of Italy’s participation in Expo 2020 Dubai dedicated to the City of Venice, a case-history of resilience to climate change and the city that is up for the role of World Sustainability Capital, Antonio Navarra (CMCC President) will speak about “Venice, a natural laboratory for combating climate change”, together with Antonello Pasini (CNR).
