Fifteen Italian experts and scientist, representing seven italian research centers, are included in the authors list of the  IPCC Fifth Assessment Report. The list is a worldwide selection of excellence in climate science and five of the authors are affiliated to CMCC

Carlo Carraro, Riccardo Valentini, Valentina Bosetti, Emanuele Massetti and Massimo Tavoni are the CMCC’s experts who are included in the list of the authors selected by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change for the Fifth Assessment Report.
The list consists of leading experts in the respective fields with a range of scientific views on climate change. In selecting the author teams the IPCC stressed the need for regional and gender balance and recognized the importance of involving new and younger authors.

The procedure for the IPCC AR5

The procedure for the preparation of the IPCC Assessment Report includes several steps and players for selected authors. During several meetings (started with the Scoping Meeting held in Venice in July 2009 and ended in Bali with the IPCC plenary session in October 2009) the AR5 outline has been defined and each chapter has been committed to the respective list of authors; each list includes different categories of authors: Coordinating Lead Authors, Lead Authors and Reviewer Editors.

In summary, Coordinating Lead Authors and Lead Authors are
responsible for drafting the chapters and revising them, taking into account comments submitted by expert reviewers during the two IPCC-mandated reviews, namely the expert review and the second review by governments and experts.
A first draft of the Report will be submitted to the process of revision and redrafting which is overseen by the Review Editors whose role is to assist the Working Group/Task Force Bureaux in identifying reviewers for the expert review process, ensure that all substantive expert and government review comments are afforded appropriate consideration, advise lead authors on how to handle contentious/controversial issues and ensure genuine controversies are reflected adequately in the text of the Report.
A representative crosssection of authors will also contribute to drafting, revising and finalising the Technical Summary and Summary for Policymakers (SPM).

The CMCC in the IPCC AR5

The five CMCC Italian experts involved in the preparation of IPCC AR5 will play different roles for different chapters. In the Working Group III, Carlo Carraro (President of the University of Venice and Director of the Climate Impacts and Policy Division at CMCC) is Review Editor for the chapter 16 “Cross-cutting Investment and Finance Issues”; in the same chapter Emanuele Massetti has been selected as Lead Author. Others Lead Authors in the WGIII are Valentina Bosetti for the chapter 2 “Integrated Risk and Uncertainty Assessment of Climate Change Response Policies” and Massimo Tavoni for the chapter 6 “Assessing Transformation Pathways”.
Riccardo Valentini (Director of IAFENT division at CMCC and University of Tuscia), is selected as  Coordinating Lead Author in the chapter 2 (“Europe”) of the WGII.
“We are very glad to have the opportunity to contribute to a publication so important as the IPCC AR5”, Antonio Navarra, CMCC’s President, said.
