Italy in a changing climate, kilometer by kilometer: the new open source data from CMCC projections

Posted on

High resolution projection data on temperature and precipitation in Italy up to 2100 is now available on the CMCC Data Delivery System, the free and open access point to CMCC data.

With the Data Delivery System (dds.cmcc.it), the CMCC Foundation makes data produced and used by its research activities available and therefore facilitates its dissemination and use by various interested users.

Among the data made available in the course of 2022 is the 8-km climate data produced by the CMCC over the entire Italian territory through simulations using the COSMO-CLM regional climate model developed by the REMHI division – Regional Models and geo-Hydrological Impacts.

Model data made available on the platform concerns two-meter temperature and precipitations. This dataset has been largely used to perform impact analysis over different Italian areas, and validation analysis is available in the literature to carefully assess the model error. Available data includes historical (1979/2005) and future (2006/2100) climate data under scenarios RCP4.5 and RCP8.5.

“The 8 km simulation data can now be downloaded for free from the CMCC Data Delivery System and we hope it will be widely used by the community for many different sorts of studies on Italy,” said Paola Mercogliano, director of CMCC’s REMHI Division. “We have also made available, on the same platform, 2.2 km x 2.2 km reanalysis to provide a very detailed and comprehensive dataset of climatological data for the last 30 years: this is a result of a previously published study conducted within the project HighlanderHigh performance computing to support smart land services, which will also be available on the project’s website”.
