Leonardo DiCaprio ha vinto l’Oscar 2016 come Miglior Attore Protagonista per la sua interpretazione in “The Revenant”. Nel suo discorso di accettazione dell’Oscar, DiCaprio ha colto l’opportunità per portare nuovamente all’attenzione dell’opinione pubblica il problema del global warming, dichiarando: “I cambiamenti climatici sono reali, e stanno accadendo proprio in questo momento. Sono il pericolo più grave e urgente che la nostra specie si trovi ad affrontare. Dobbiamo lavorare insieme e smettere di procrastinare.” L’attore si è rivolto in maniera critica anche al mondo politico, affermando: “Dobbiamo sostenere quei leader politici in tutto il mondo che non parlino in nome dei grandi inquinatori, ma che parlino in nome di tutta l’umanità”.

Nel 2014, il Segretario Generale delle Nazioni Unite Ban Ki-moon aveva nominato l’attore “Messaggero di Pace” dell’ONU, con focus sul clima, per il suo impegno in difesa dell’ambiente; a gennaio 2016 DiCaprio aveva inoltre ricevuto il prestigioso Crystal Award al World Economic Forum a Davos, in Svizzera, un riconoscimento conferito a quegli artisti che si siano distinti per l’impegno nell’affrontare le principali sfide umanitarie e ambientali globali.

“[…] And lastly I just want to say this: Making The Revenant was about man’s relationship to the natural world. A world that we collectively felt in 2015 as the hottest year in recorded history. Our production needed to move to the southern tip of this planet just to be able to find snow. Climate change is real, it is happening right now. It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species, and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating. We need to support leaders around the world who do not speak for the big polluters, but who speak for all of humanity, for the indigenous people of the world, for the billions and billions of underprivileged people out there who would be most affected by this. For our children’s children, and for those people out there whose voices have been drowned out by the politics of greed. I thank you all for this amazing award tonight. Let us not take this planet for granted. I do not take tonight for granted. Thank you so very much”.
