CMCC is a non-profit research institution with the aim to investigate and model the climate system and its interactions with society and the environment. The Ocean Modeling and Data Assimilation (ODA) division deals with numerical models and methods for interdisciplinary research. The ODA team is responsible for the development and evaluation of i) ocean, sea ice and biogeochemical components of the CMCC Earth System Model, and ii) data assimilation methods used for operational ocean forecasting and reanalysis on global and regional scale.
We invite applications for two positions, one as research associate (i.e., technical career at CMCC) one as post-doc. We are seeking highly motivated and talented researchers to support the ODA modeling activities under national and international projects.
The selected candidates will work as an integrative part of a multidisciplinary team within the division and with external partners. The main tasks will be to maintain and assist further developments of our numerical codes for a variety of applications at regional and global scales. He/she will work in a collaborative environment, which may imply frequent attendance to group/project meetings.
The position will take on a pivotal role within the ocean modelling team in implementing numerical models, designing and executing model experiments in either the global or regional configurations. The duties will also include participating to the continued development of NEMO (Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean), and processing and interpreting simulation-based and observational data sets.
Junior research associate:
Ph.D. in oceanography, physics, climate science or related disciplines (e.g. environmental science, geoscience), or at least 3 years’ experience related to ocean modelling and data analysis in addition to a scientific master’s degree.
Ph.D. in oceanography, physics, climate science or related disciplines (e.g. environmental science, geoscience).
good experience using numerical ocean models (preferably NEMO);
programming skills in scientific programing languages such as Python, MATLAB or R;
experience in using parallel high-performance computer clusters;
experience working in a UNIX or Linux environment and script languages (e.g. *nix shell);
good knowledge of English (written and oral);
