The first Digital Ocean Week (8–12 June 2026, Brussels) is an event organised by Mercator Ocean International, highlighting the link between Europe’s ocean ambitions and the digital infrastructures needed to deliver them. The aim is to explore how Europe is developing its Digital Ocean system, from ocean observation to digital services, and how the Copernicus Marine Service and the European Digital Twin Ocean are advancing, with artificial intelligence unlocking new capabilities and applications.

CMCC contributes to the discussion through the participation of its experts, bringing extensive scientific expertise and insights.

8 June 2026, 17:30 – 18:30 CEST  | High Level Opening Event
Session EU Ocean Pact priorities – Community perspectives | Coastal & islands, 18:15 – 18:20 CEST
Speakers:
Corrina Schrum, Hereon, Director of the Institute of Coastal Systems – Analysis and Modelling
Giovanni Coppini, Principal Scientist, CMCC Foundation – Euro-Mediterranean Centre on Climate Change, Italy

The 8 June opening event will anchor the European policy vision in the EU Ocean Pact and the development of Europe’s digital ocean systems, bringing together the Copernicus Marine service, EMODNet, and the European Digital Twin Ocean as a coherent and operational architecture for evidence-based ocean policymaking. It will highlight the key achievements of the Copernicus Marine service and its evolution towards Copernicus 3 and the next Multiannual Financial Framework, underlining long-term investment needs for Europe’s ocean observation and digital infrastructure capacities. The event will also set the stage for a community dialogue structured around the EU Ocean Pact priorities, reflecting key thematic areas of ocean action across environmental, economic, territorial, and security dimensions. It will conclude with a forward-looking perspective on the European Digital Twin Ocean and next-generation digital ocean capabilities, including the announcement of the AI Ocean Forum. Closing remarks will formally launch the Digital Ocean Week and highlight the OceanEye high-level event – From Vision to Implementation (10 June).
