The SDGsEYEs User uptake webinar will provide a comprehensive exploration of this critical environmental issue, addressing its impact on climate and sustainability. This interactive session will delve into innovative Earth Observation (EO)-based methodologies for estimating and monitoring greenhouse gas emissions caused by forest fires.

Participants will gain insights into the pilot’s advanced tools and datasets, designed to enhance stakeholders’ understanding and response strategies to forest fire emissions. The webinar will foster discussions on potential applications, align solutions with user needs, and encourage the adoption of the pilot’s outcomes to address real-world challenges.

Key Highlights:

  • Explore the alignment of SDG 13, Climate Action, with the European Climate Law, which aims for climate neutrality in the EU by 2050 and a 55% reduction in GHG emissions by 2030.
  • Understand how the SDGs-EYES approach improves GHG emissions estimates from forest fires, leveraging Copernicus data for real-time calculations based on physical variables such as burnt area, forest type, biomass levels, and scorch height.
  • Discuss the role of this pilot in supporting global efforts, as the United Nations shapes the post-2030 agenda to advance sustainability goals.

This webinar marks the beginning of a series of interactive events organised by EARSC to engage user communities and facilitate the integration of SDGsEYEs pilot solutions into practical, real-world applications. The session will focus on the pilot addressing GHG emissions from forest fires, exploring its potential to support SDG 13 (Climate Action).

The SDGsEYEs approach uses EO data, leveraging the Copernicus program to enhance the accuracy of GHG emissions estimates from forest fires. By incorporating data such as burnt area, forest type, biomass levels, and scorch height, SDGsEYEs automates workflows to enable near real-time GHG emission calculations. This innovation directly supports the EU’s climate neutrality goals for 2050 and the 55% reduction target for 2030 under the European Climate Law.
