JPI Climate Working Group 3 held a workshop with stakeholders at San Giorgio Island in Venice, Italy, on 14-15 October 2013. The aim was to identify research priorities in social sciences and humanities on climate change adaptation and mitigation (CCAM) and to discuss how collaboration between researchers and stakeholders can be facilitated and strengthened. Stakeholders were invited in an individual capacity and the workshop was held under Chatham House rule. The participants had experience from government, business and not-for-profit organisations across Europe dealing with CCAM.

CCAM research should thus be to help remedy this failure. An analysis of the reasons for failure is a useful starting point for finding remedies. These reasons point towards most aspects of human life and societies, and evidence suggests that we will not meet the climate change challenge only through arguments and measures specifically aimed at CCAM. Thus, there is a need for a very broad understanding of CCAM research, taking into account also other large-scale patterns of change in the world and how these interact with climate change.
