The UPTAKE monthly webinar series returns, continuing its engaging discussions on carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies and the latest research developments. The next session in the series, dedicated to recent publications on CDR research, will focus on the paper “Quantifying climate change effects of bioenergy and BECCS: critical considerations and guidance on methodology.”
This discussion will explore bioenergy’s role in climate change mitigation, particularly when paired with carbon capture and storage (BECCS). While bioenergy is a promising strategy, divergent results of its effectiveness are reported in the scientific literature due to methodological choices and assumptions, such as land use, feedstock alternatives, energy sources and system boundaries.
This talk will present some highlights of the paper:
- An updated methodology—building on the International Energy Agency’s framework—to standardize assessments of bioenergy’s climate impacts.
- Recommendations for consistent system boundaries, reference systems, and climate forcers to ensure robust and comparable evaluations.
Speaker: Annette Cowie, Senior Principal Research Scientist, Climate at NSW Department of Primary Industries
Panelist: Stefan Majer, DBFZ
Moderator: Eilidh Foster, DRAX GROUP
ORGANIZED BY:
Coordinated by CMCC, UPTAKE seeks to support the sustainable expansion of CDR methods by developing reliable strategies through technical, theoretical, and practical analysis—plus interactive dialogue within a dedicated stakeholder forum.
UPTAKE is an EU-funded research project on CDR methods and knowledge coordinated by CMCC Foundation (EIEE Institute).
