The Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change (CMCC) takes part in Visualising Climate 2026, the first global conference dedicated to data visualisation for climate and environmental sciences, taking place in Bologna, Italy, from 4 to 6 November 2026.
As part of the conference programme, CMCC, together with the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), contributes to the workshop “Turning climate data into comics and visual narratives”. Emma D’Orto and Antonella Mele from CMCC will present examples of visualisation work developed within several European projects, highlighting the importance of communicating scientific data through effective and engaging visual approaches.
Communicating complex climate data and concepts, such as climate overshoot and uncertainty, remains a challenge when engaging non-expert audiences. Effective visual communication can help bring complex data to life, going beyond simply presenting information to make it part of a compelling narrative. These approaches can make scientific information more accessible and intuitive to diverse audiences, fostering deeper understanding and more meaningful engagement.
The workshop will explore how comics and other visual storytelling formats can complement traditional data visualisation approaches by embedding quantitative information within narratives and using visual metaphors and simplified graphical representations to make complex scientific concepts easier to understand.
Visualising Climate 2026 is the first global conference dedicated to data visualisation for climate and environmental sciences, taking place in Bologna, Italy, from 4 to 6 November 2026.
Over three days of talks, workshops, and informal conversations, participants will delve into how data can be visualised to inform, engage, inspire action, and influence policy. This summit, bringing together scientists, artists, communicators, and journalists, is a space to share tools, techniques, and case studies that push the boundaries of visual narratives, foster interdisciplinary collaboration and co-creation, and empower change through data visualisation.
