Petrescu Roxana

A. M. Roxana Petrescu is senior environmental researcher specialised on emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs). She has a background bachelor diploma in environmental engineering and a PhD in environmental sciences/hydrology defended at the Faculty of Life Sciences – Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VUA) in January 2010, with a thesis entitled “Modelling CH4 emissions from wetlands: effects of hydrological parameterization”.

After her PhD she was working for the European Commissions Joint Research Centre, as part of theEDGAR database operational team, and in charge of developing new methodologies for the inclusion of carbon stocks from the LULUCF sector, performing updates, data management, gridding procedures and data intercomparisons. Subsequently, she was part of the Earth and Climate Cluster at VUA, working on EU funded projects such as VERIFY, CoCO2 and currently on AVENGERS and
IM4CA.

Her work is dealing with the reconciliation and assessment of different models and tools leading to verification of GHG inventories by synthesising observation-based estimates of GHG fluxes from bottom-up (emission inventory data, process-based model results, data-driven sector model results), top-down (inversion-based estimates) and global emissions databases (e.g. EDGAR, FAOSTAT). This work is done in close collaboration with national reporting agencies and informs them, as well as third parties, on existing procedures which can be potentially used to verify national level UNFCCC reported emission inventories with other scientific estimates.

Roxana Petrescu’s work on data review and analysis is well represented by her scientific publications. She is trained in reporting and presenting her results to a broad audience having different backgrounds e.g. scientists, policy makers and stakeholders.
