The RFF-CMCC European Institute on Economics and the Environment (EIEE) is a research institute co-founded in 2018 by Resources for the Future (RFF) and the Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change (CMCC). The Institute’s mission is to improve environmental, energy, and natural resource decisions through impartial economic research and policy engagement. The Institute is committed to being a central focal point for research insights and policy solutions within Europe, and connecting that work internationally. This is achieved by combining excellence in environmental and energy economics with the climate science and policy competences. EIEE has strong ties with a world-wide network of research institutions engaged in topics ranging from environmental research, climate change, economics, energy systems but also sustainability transitions and policy evaluation. This implies a very interactive, collaborative and interdisciplinary work environment and research experience.

RFF-CMCC European Institute on Economics and the Environment is currently encouraging applications for a Post Doc researcher position in the following macro-area of research:

  • Macro-financial systems and the low-carbon transition (ref. 9738)

Duties will be carried out in Milan (Italy) in the heart of the vibrant design district (@ BASE). The selected candidate will interact with researchers of different research background and nationalities. She/he will focus on writing top quality scientific papers, will be engaged in a global network and will have the chance to attend major conferences.

Detailed job descriptions:

  • Macro-financial systems and the low-carbon transition (ref. 9738): the successful applicant will be working within the ERC Starting Grant SMOOTH, “Sustainable finance for a smooth low-carbon transition”. The aim of the project is to analyse the multiple links between financial systems and the transition to a decarbonised society, providing insights on: i) the drivers of potential instability along the transition process (e.g. misaligned ‘sentiments’ of financial investors); and ii) the policies to achieve a rapid and smooth low-carbon transition (with a focus on the role of central banks and financial supervisors). The candidate will work as part of an interdisciplinary team with backgrounds in macroeconomic and transition modelling, political economy and behavioural finance. The ideal candidate holds (or is close to completing) a PhD in economics, finance, statistics, or related disciplines. Proficiency in at least one programming language used for macroeconomic modelling (e.g. R, Matlab) is required. Experience with the study of financial expectations and ‘animal spirits’ dynamics will constitute an asset. An excellent command of written and spoken English is essential for the position.

Belonging to legally protected categories (ex L. 68/99) will constitute a preferential condition.

Assignments are expected to begin in late 2020/ early 2021. The appointment period will be initially of one year, renewable for up to two more years. The gross salary will be based on qualification and working experience and competitive with major research centers in Europe.
