Abstract

While Australia has been at the forefront of climate resilience research and policy for the past fifteen years, this has not been sufficient to mitigate the impact of widespread natural hazards fuelled by climate change, including bushfires, floods, and coastal storms. With short term, effective carbon emission reduction back in the national political agenda since the recent change in the Federal Government, sectoral adaptation and resilience policies have been developed and adopted over the past decade. Coastal adaptation is embedded in two of the largest states, Queensland, and NSW, to reduce the impact of erosion, storm surge and flooding on coastal communities and environments. Resilience is in the forefront of coastal, environmental, and urban planning, but there is still a need to effectively adopt multi-hazard risk and adaptation approaches which account for the combined effects of multiple hazards, near-real time changes in the exposure of assets and services and the complex adaptive responses of government, society, and the environment to emerging risks.  New research, relevant to the Europe and Australia, will be developed to reduce these barriers by using machine learning and data science techniques to be deployed through climate services.
