International Energy Workshop
22-24 June 2026 | Cape Town, South Africa – University of Cape Town
More information

The 44th edition of the International Energy Workshop (IEW) will be hosted by the University of Cape Town in Cape Town, South Africa, on 22-24 June, 2026.
The IEW is a leading conference for the international energy modelling community. In a world of environmental and economic constraints, energy modelling is an increasingly important tool for addressing the complexity of energy planning and policy making. The IEW provides a venue for scholars and researchers to compare modelling tools, to discuss modelling advances for emerging energy sector issues, and to observe new trends in the global energy sector.
CMCC actively engages in IEW’s activities by managing its Secretariat. Additionally, CMCC’s Principal Scientist, Massimo Tavoni, acts as one of IEW’s co-directors, reinforcing CMCC’s commitment to driving innovation in energy modeling.
This year’s edition of the IEW returns to Cape Town, South Africa — a city that last hosted the workshop back in 2012. The choice is far from coincidental. Africa stands at a pivotal crossroads in the global energy transition: endowed with extraordinary renewable energy potential — from solar irradiation across the Sahel and southern Africa to wind, geothermal, and hydropower resources — the continent holds strategic importance for any credible discussion of global decarbonization pathways. At the same time, questions of energy access, affordability, and just transition make Africa a critical lens through which to examine the equity dimensions of energy policy. Hosted by the University of Cape Town’s Energy Systems Research Group, IEW 2026 is well-positioned to place these issues at the heart of the international agenda.
