Curriculum vitae

Valentina Giannini is a researcher at the Euro-Mediterranean Centre on Climate Change (CMCC) where she is developing methods to support decision making and foster knowledge integration for climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction, and natural resources management.  Her main interests include community based and participatory processes (e.g. stakeholders’ participation, capacity building, information sharing and empowerment), and her research focus is on impacts of climate on society (e.g. land-use, disaster risk reduction and water management).  Valentina started developing this research focus in 2008 when she began to work for Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (FEEM).  She previously worked as an architect and planner for eight years (Italy), concentrating on bioclimatic architecture and land-use planning, and tutored students in the Studio of Urban Planning at the Politecnico di Milano (Italy). Valentina holds a PhD from the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice (Italy) in “Science and Management of Climate Change” with the thesis “Knowledge sharing among and within stakeholder groups to cope with climate related risks”; a Masters of Environmental Management from Yale University, School of Forestry and Environmental Studies (USA) with the thesis “Fish, fishers, industrial fishing, intermediaries, watershed contamination, sea contamination.  Can a virtuous behaviour disrupt vicious chains in Guatemala?”; and an MSc in Architecture & Planning from the Politecnico di Milano (Italy) with the thesis “Aesthetics of an anthropogenic landscape: the Magra River Valley”.
