Francesco Immorlano received his Master of Science in Computer Engineering with honors at the University of Salento in April 2020, presenting the thesis project “The use of Machine Learning for Detection and Tracking of Tropical Cyclones” developed in collaboration with the Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change (CMCC) Foundation.

He obtained his Ph.D. degree in Engineering of Complex Systems at the Department of Engineering for Innovation of the University of Salento in May 2024, conducting research at the intersection of artificial intelligence and climate change. He worked on several use cases, such as downscaling, tropical cyclones detection, and the improvement of global warming estimates in the long-term future. Since May 2020, he has been actively collaborating with the machine learning research unit of the Advanced Scientific Computing division (now ADIC) of CMCC.

From September 2024, he is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California Irvine and the Learning the Earth with Artificial Intelligence and Physics (LEAP) Science and Technology Center (STC). He is currently investigating the design and development of diffusion models and other generative models with a specific application to climate science. He has been a CMCC affiliate ever since.
